While hurtling through the sky on a 100,000-pound metal contraption, there are things you should avoid doing. From personal experience, don’t drink the water, don’t recline your seat during meal service, and please never take your shoes off no matter how brief the flight. Flight etiquette is essential to enjoying your flight and making the trip seamless for all parties involved. Here is a list of ten things to avoid doing on an airplane.
1. Don’t Take Your Shoes Off

Imagine sitting on a five-hour excursion, and the guy beside you removes his shoes. The scent lingers through the cabin and sneaks up your nose while trying to sleep, eat, and exist. If you need to switch from sneakers to a more forgiving shoe, bring covered slippers to avoid fellow flight mates passing out.
2. Don’t Bring Smelly Foods

You may like tuna, but nothing is worse than inhaling the stench of fish at 5 in the morning while trapped in an air cargo. Please be kind to others and save the stinky foods for landing. If the aroma fills up a room on its own, avoid packing it.
3. Don’t Be Rude

This one applies to other passengers but mostly to flight attendants. They are there to help you and ease any discomfort on flights. They do not know why the flight costs $500 and do not understand why Sally’s kid misbehaves. Show respect, and they’ll respect you back.
4. Don’t Forget Headphones

If you’ve traveled via plane, you’ve probably encountered someone who forgot their headphones and blasted their sports game off their phone. No matter how much you insist they turn it down, they ignore you and begin cheering for their team. Bring headphones and stay quiet.
5. Don’t Sprawl

Here’s a rule for passengers. Window seats get the window, the middle seat gets two armrests, and the aisle seat gets the armrest closest to the aisle. For legroom, you only get the space in front of your seat. Don’t man spread into other people’s areas, and do not ask for others to give you more space when they’re in their given space.
6. Don’t Flood the Aisle When the Plane Lands

One of the worst parts of flying is when the passengers sitting in the back of the plane decide they’re in a rush and bolt to the doors. You can’t get out of the plane until the pilot and crew give the go-ahead, and when you rush the front, you screw up the unloading process and make it difficult for flight attendants to navigate the aisle. Be patient and wait your turn.
7. Don’t Drink the Water

The filtered water on a plane sits in containers that are rarely cleaned. Because of this, bacteria and germs collect in the water and may get you sick. So, avoid asking for a cup of water, coffee, or hot chocolate, and instead, drink bottled water on the plane.
8. Don’t Let Your Kids Roam

Not everyone loves kids. Despite what you may think, your child won’t be viewed as cute, or harmless while crawling through the aisles and drooling over a stranger’s pants. Make sure you keep an eye on your child so they don’t disturb others around them.
9. Don’t Recline Without Permission

So you’re minding your own business in the middle seat when the person in front of you stretches and leans back, cramping your crowded space and placing your tray table in the middle of your person. If you have to recline your seat, ask the person behind you.
10. Don’t Sit Still

My friend’s grandpa passed out on a plane once because he sat down the whole plane ride. You need to keep the blood flowing through your body, meaning you must get up and move around the aircraft or do small exercises in your seat. Whenever the seatbelt sign blinks off, get up and meander through the plane for a bit.
