What they didn’t reveal was the person’s name. Well, fast forward to the printing of “Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival,” and the Dutch version named the two people who discussed the subject.
The British Royal Family is Far From a Fairytale
For many, the British royal family are the iconic fairytales that came to life. They have a mystique that has fascinated people for centuries. Despite all the wealth, pomp, and circumstance, the British royal family has shown they are fallible and deeply flawed, just like everyone else.
Exactly how and why only the Dutch version of Endgame named King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales as the royals who brought up the potential skin color of Harry’s child doesn’t really matter. What does is the racial implications on the current King of the United Kingdom and 14 territories. He is already on thin-ice with many of his subjects– Will this be the last straw?
Here’s 9 Scandals of the Past The Rocked the Royal Family
One only has to look back at the scandals that plagued the Royal House of Windsor to see that all the latest drama with Harry & Meghan, and Wills and Kate is nothing new.
1. King Edward VIII’s Abdication
Soon after his ascension to the throne in early 1936, he proposed marriage to Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American divorcing her second husband. As monarch, Edward VIII was also the head of the Church of England, and marriage to a divorced person was against church doctrine. Eleven months after becoming king, Edward abdicated the throne so he could marry.
2. Princess Margaret and Peter Townsend
Edward VIII wasn’t the only royal to fall in love with a married person. Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, became involved with Peter Townsend, a married man who was also 16 years her senior. He divorced his wife and became engaged to the princess. Because of the Church of England’s strict doctrine about remarriage after divorce, the couple went their separate ways.
3. Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones
A few years after her engagement to Peter Townsend ended, Princess Margaret married photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones. Their relationship was tumultuous, with both alleged to have cheated on the other. In 1976, they divorced after salacious pictures were published of Margaret and a younger man together in the Caribbean.
4. Squidgygate
In 1992, the marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana was already on the rocks. Then the British press published the text of a phone conversation between Diana and James Gilbey, with whom she was alleged to have been engaged in an extramarital relationship. Gilbey called Diana by a pet name, “Squidgy,” which is how the scandal came to be known as “Squidgygate.”
5. Camillagate
Months after the Squidgygate leaked call scandal, the royal family was rocked by another leaked personal phone call, this time between Prince Charles and his longtime paramour Camilla Parker Bowles, who were married to other people then. An Australian magazine published the text of a call between the two, which caused another scandal because of the intimate nature of the conversation.
6. Princess Diana’s BBC Interview
If there were any hopes of reconciling the marriage between the Prince and Princess of Wales, they were hopelessly dashed in 1995 after Princess Diana gave a shocking solo television interview to the BBC’s Martin Bashir. She opened up about Charles and Camilla, her marital infidelities, and her struggles with life in the public eye. The royal couple divorced the following year.
7. Princess Anne and Timothy Laurence
In 1989, a married Princess Anne started a relationship with Timothy Laurence, a British naval officer and one of the Queen’s staff members. The relationship was uncovered after a British tabloid obtained copies of letters between the two that had been stolen. Anne divorced her husband in 1992 and married Laurence that same year.
8. Fergie’s Foot-Licking Photo
Six years into her marriage to Prince Andrew, Sarah, the Duchess of York, also known as “Fergie,” made the tabloids with photographs of herself on vacation with John Bryan, a financial advisor from the United States. In one of the photographs, Bryan was captured licking her foot. Fergie and Andrew separated that same year and divorced in 1996.
9. Prince Harry’s Nazi Armband
In 2005, the Duke of Sussex (then known as Prince Harry) had a well-deserved reputation as a royal wild child with his hard-partying ways. Still, it was a shock to see leaked photos of him at a costume party, wearing an armband emblazoned with a swastika. He released a statement of apology for the offense.
