Getting your drone into Germany
Getting your drone into Germany is pretty easy. There are no restrictions or certifications required to bring your drone into Germany. This is an extremely easy process compared to the likes of Turkey or Dubai which require a lot of paperwork. So you are able to get your drone to Berlin easily.
Note: There are strict regulations surrounding drones on airlines. Please research your airline’s policies before travelling. You may need to carry your drone in hand luggage, or checked luggage, depending on the airline.
As part of the European Union, Germany is compliant with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
Do you need a license to fly your drone in Berlin?
As one of the most modern countries technology-wise, Germany has very understanding and up-to-date drone rules. If you are going to be flying a drone in Berlin, it’s worth knowing if you need a license. Recreational drone operators do not require a permit or license. You are able to fly your drone as you please, within the rules of course.
As for drone operators flying for commercial purposes, you require a permit and a license. You require drone insurance and you need to pass a theory exam. Luftfahrt-Bundesamt Authority will issue penalties if this is not complied with.
Rules for flying a drone in Berlin
As a drone owner, you will be aware that there are rules around the use of a drone. Germany is no different. If you are going to be flying a drone in Berlin, you must comply with the rules and respect them. Failure to do so will result in fines from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt Authority which depend on the severity of your infringement.
The most important rules to know for flying a drone in Berlin are:
- You must maintain a direct line of sight with the drone
- You mustn’t fly near crowds of people
- You mustn’t fly over 100 metres (roughly 330 feet)
- Drones weighing over 250 grams must have insurance
- You can only fly during the day- no night flights permitted
- Drones over 2kg must be registered
And obviously airports and sensitive areas like military camps are no-fly zones.

The Reichstag is the seat of the German parliament and one of the most iconic buildings in Berlin. Visitors can take photos of the exterior of the building, which is covered in glass, or they can go inside and take photos of the chamber where parliament meets. The Reichstag building is simply beautiful, its architecture is amazing, and the photos come out so well!
Charlottenburg Palace
Charlottenburg Palace is a baroque palace located in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district. Today, the palace is a museum and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Berlin. Visitors can take photos of the exterior of the palace or stroll through the gardens. It makes for some beautiful pictures, it’s such a vibrant building and this is really portrayed through the photos.
Television Tower
The TV Tower is a communications tower that offers panoramic views of Berlin from its observation deck. The views are insane! If you don’t own a drone, come up here to capture Berlin from the skies. The tower is located in Alexanderplatz, which is also home to a number of other tourist attractions, making it a popular spot for photographers.
Brandenburg Gate
Brandenburg Gate, although technically (once) part of the Berlin Wall, is another great place to take photographs in Berlin. Its beauty is astounding, again, the architecture is out of this world. It’s such a beautiful landmark, and one not to be skipped if you are visiting Berlin. Particularly if you enjoy taking photos.
