We went here at least once daily– often right away when they opened for lunch and then again for an afternoon snack. We’ve been home for a month, and my kids still talk about Rita’s– the homemade guacamole, the endless platters of chips and salsa, and of course, the tacos!

The resort’s water activities are easily booked through the Margaritaville Island Reserve app. Each day offers different options—I tried paddleboarding, beach yoga, and convinced my family to try beach volleyball one afternoon.

The resort offers organized kids’ activities throughout the day. Morning craft sessions include bracelet-making and painting workshops that both my kids enjoyed. The evening entertainment features live music and standout shows: we danced at a high-energy Carnaval party on the beach one night and a viewed a traditional Caribbean showcase with local dancers the next.

Fun in the Sun: Pool Activities and Games

The resort features distinct pool zones—a bustling main pool anchored by the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, plus a peaceful adults-only second with the License to Chill bar. Daily entertainment includes competitive song trivia, where families can test their knowledge of top hits and Jimmy Buffett favorites.

We also experienced a “foam party” while we were there, which is as fun as it sounds– my kids splashed in mountains of bubbles in the pool, while we relaxed on the deck with tropical drinks in hand.

Mixology Magic: Margarita Making Contests

Mixology classes go beyond basic margarita-making. The poolside sessions teach proper techniques for balancing flavors, mastering proper pouring methods, and creating the perfect Margaritaville Margarita. 

The hands-on experience lets you shake, stir, and taste your creations while picking up bartending tips you can use at home. My husband entered the contest and ended up taking third place for his passionfruit margarita cocktail.

Sunset Sessions at the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar

The pre-dinner hours at an all-inclusive resort offer a special kind of magic. At sunset, we gathered at the Compass Bar in the lobby or the oceanfront 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar to enjoy craft cocktails while our kids sipped on colorful mocktails (club soda with a splash of grenadine, extra lime and cherries!) 

We made it our nightly ritual to bring a deck of cards, playing hands of go fish and golf as the sun dipped down below the water.

Italian Evening: Frank and Lola’s Trattoria

Frank and Lola’s Italian Trattoria brings the warmth of an Italian family dinner to Cancun. You’ll want to book this as soon as you arrive as it was one of the highlight meals of our trip. 

Every bite is delicious, from the homemade bread and olive oil served upon sitting to the housemade pasta and wood-fired pizza. There is a good accompanying wine list as well. 

The menu balances authentic Italian cuisine with crowd-pleasing favorites– I recommend the arancini, the lasagna and the gnocchi!

A Taste of Latin America
