Have Your Own ‘Players Playoff’ at TPC Sawgrass With This Marriott Package
For the first time in ten years, The Players Tournament needed a playoff to crown its champion. Despite the early Monday morning tee-off time, Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun battled for the golden trophy in front of a surprisingly large crowd. In typical TPC Sawgrass fashion, whoever mastered the 17th hole went home victorious. In the latest of golf’s David vs. Goliath, World #2 McIlroy outplayed #57 Spaun.
If you dream of playing these holes like the pros, your own playoff is not only possible, it’s easy.

TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course: A Primer
- Architect(s): Pete Dye
- Year Built: 1980
- Yardage: 7245 yards
- Par: 72
Home of the nerve-wracking, do-or-die 17th par three island green, TPC Sawgrass’s Stadium Course epitomizes target golf and precision striking. Almost all the greens have random lumps and hollows (Dye calls his “grenade attack architecture”), and the windy Atlantic coast winds make the already tough course even more challenging.
This masterpiece is one of the reasons why Pete Dye’s name is on the best-of-the-best lists. Not only was he a talented architect, but he also took the sage advice of partners on many courses, including his wife, Alice.
“When Pete Dye designed the famous 17th hole, he did so in a manner that would be too difficult and create game delays. Alice saw that the ball would roll into the water,” said Bobby Peel, a golf pro and Founder of Best Golf Accessories. “She told him to tilt the green toward the tee box so the ball would rest on the green and not roll off into the water. Thanks to Alice, it is still one of the world’s most difficult and exciting holes, but not impossible.”
